Teaching Sequence: Basic Electric Units

Learning Unit: What is Electricity

Effects of Electricity

When electric current flows „electrical work“ is produced by the impact of electrical power.

Energy is the ability to „do work“, therefore one speaks of „electrical energy.

The great importance of electricity in most every technical field stems from the diversity of the effects achieveable through electrical currents.

Some different forms of electric energy are:

Thermal Energy

electric current produces heat, as in soldering irons and radiators

Magnetic Energy

electric current produces electromagnetic (force)fields, as in motors

Light Energy

electric current produces light, as in light bulbs (incandescent light) or fluorescent tubes

Chemical Energy

electric current causes chemical processes, as in battery packs

Physiological Effects

electric current affects the bodies of humans and animals, as in electric shocks

Electric current cannot be seen, heard or smelled. It can be only experienced through it's effects
